Every book project is unique. It's simply impossible to provide a one-size-fits-all price sheet. What we can do is tell you what's knowable now, and how the rest gets decided.
Costs
- The cost of editorial service depends primarily on two factors: the length of the manuscript and the quality of the writing. It is impossible to give even a rough estimate before we have seen a sample of the manuscript.
- Simple page layout generally starts at $4 a page. Features like footnotes, tables, and photographs make the layout more complex. A very complex page may cost $8 or more.
- Cover design ranges from $500 to close to $2,000 depending on the complexity of the design and whether or not we are composing back cover text.
- For printing, the price varies based on quantity, format, paper, and where it's printed — but we can usually get you a useful ballpark once we know the basic specs: page count (estimate), trim size, binding type, and number of copies.
Timeline
- The editorial process can run weeks or months depending on the manuscript length and writing quality. Besides editing, there will also be proofreading twice: first before layout and then again afterwards (the layout process always introduces new errors).
- Digital printing generally takes one to three weeks. Offset printing generally takes 4 to 8 weeks. Neither number includes shipping time.
- A small, well-written book can be in print in as little as a few months.
